Aleksandr Eryzhinsky Killed in Trophy Raid Crash Near Gelendzhik, Russia, 2019
Co-driver Aleksandr Eryzhinsky, 33, was killed when an off-road vehicle left the course and tumbled down a slope near Gelendzhik, Russia, on March 30, 2019. The crash occurred during an ascent of Mount Ostraya in the first round of the Russian Trophy Raid Championship. Eryzhinsky died at the scene. Driver Mikhail Chaykovsky, 45, survived and was hospitalized. The Krasnodar Krai Investigative Committee said his life was not in danger and opened an inquiry into the crash. Bystander footage shows the vehicle climbing a steep grassy slope before rolling backward toward a treeline. Later views show the wreck among trees. In-car footage also shows helmeted occupants, but does not establish which crew member is which. |

Re: Aleksandr Eryzhinsky Killed in Trophy Raid Crash Near Gelendzhik, Russia, 2019
Left front tire was seriously bald and it was spinning a bit. It might have kept the forward motion up if it had a normal tread. I think the tranny or drivetrain might have failed for the Suzuki to lurch backward like that. But even an engine stall might have triggered the descent at that climbing angle. I never seriously hillclimbed in jeeps - just foolish. I did a little of that on dirt bikes as it is easy to bail, but not much. Easy to ruin your equipment on hill climbs. |
