9 Killed, Dozens Injured when Passenger Train Crashes into Platform
A train travelling through Turkey's capital Ankara collided with a locomotive, before crashing into a station platform and overpass. Footage shows the train, carrying more than 200 passengers, smashing into the locomotive at high-impact, just before 7 am on Thursday morning. The security video shows a blast of lights and smoke billowing from the crash, before the train veers into the station and overpass. Nine people were killed and dozens injured, some seriously, about eight kilometres from the city's centre. Three train drivers were among those killed, Transport Minister Cahit Turhan confirmed. On Thursday rescuers worked through the wreckage and snow left on the tracks, to free those trapped underneath. It's understood the train was not due to stop at the Marandiz station where it crashed, and was making its way to the province of Konya. It is not clear what speed the train and locomotive were travelling at the time of the incident, but authorities are continuing investigations. Three rail workers have reportedly been arrested in connection with the collision. It follows a spate of other train accidents in the nation in recent years, including a derailment following heavy rains in July, which killed 24. It was Turkey's worst train disaster in more than a decade, with more than a hundred treated in hospital at the time. |
