Australia, A stolen car was crashed into a fuel tanker by four young joy-riders, leaving a 14-year-old boy in hospital while his ‘mates’ remain on the run.

The boy, who is in a stable condition at Townsville Hospital, was injured after he and three other juveniles were involved in the crash at Hyde Park.

The young driver of the stolen vehicle and two other youths fled the scene of the crash, leaving behind their injured mate, and they have yet to be located.

A police spokesman said the 46-year-old truck driver was not injured.

“Initial information indicates around 5.10am the stolen station wagon struck the side of a fuel tanker truck on Woolcock St,” he said.

“A passenger in the stolen vehicle, a 14-year-old boy, was taken to Townsville Hospital with injuries to his pelvis.

“Lane closures were in place for several hours while crews cleaned up the scene.”

Early investigations suggest the stolen car ran a red light at the intersection of Kings Rd and Woolcock St before colliding with the rear trailer of the tanker.

A witness found the injured passenger next to the wreckage and called emergency *services.

Police were still searching for the other three occupants of the stolen car yesterday. No charges have been laid so far.

The tanker wasn’t full and only a small amount of fuel was spilt, which was cleaned up by firefighters.

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene, and the stolen car was extensively damaged.

The car was stolen earlier that morning from a Rio Vista Way house in Kirwan.

The youths entered the home through an unlocked roller door and an unlocked internal door. They stole car keys, cash and an iPad.

Townsville police are urging residents to keep their cars and homes locked and keys out of sight to deter opportunistic thieves.

There were 30 unlawful use of a motor vehicle offences in February, while there were a further 12 in the first week of March alone.

It will be alleged that a short time later a 21-year-old local man was assaulted by members of this group of teens in nearby Hyde Park when he attempted to prevent them breaking into a car. The man sustained minor injuries after being struck with a fence paling.

Six youths, aged between 12 and 16, will be dealt with under the provisions of the Youth Justices Act, including a 12-year-old boy, the alleged driver of the vehicle.

A 14-year-old boy has been charged with assault occasioning bodily harm, enter premises and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A second 14-year-old boy was issued with a Notice to Appear for unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A 16-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy were charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

A 15-year-old girl is currently assisting police with their investigations.
