Suzuka Japan. A serious crash took place during a Ferrari Challenge race on april 24.

Shigeru Terajima's car crashed into the safety barriers.

The driver was immediately taken to the hospital in a town nearby Suzuka.

Also hurt in the crash was a Suzuka circuit volunteer.

Because of this incident, Ferrari took the decision to bring the event to an end ahead of schedule.

A racing driver and a steward both survived an unimaginably horrific crash during a Ferrari race in Japan.

The accident came during a Ferrari 458 Challenge series event at Suzuka, the iconic circuit which has long been the host for the Japanese Grand Prix.

Driver Shigeru Terajima was streaking down the start-finish straight and lost control at nearly 200mph, veering off to the side and smashing violently into the side of the circuit at the point where the pit lane comes back out onto the track.

Despite the staggering impact of the collision - which smashed the Ferrari into thousands of pieces - Terajima somehow survived, though he was taken to hospital in a serious condition before pulling through.

Thankfully, the steward at the side of the circuit also survived, receiving only minor injuries - no doubt having saved his own life by realising what was happening and trying to dive out of the way at the very last minute.

Investigators have yet to determine the exact cause of the crash, but once again two men are left to thank the incredibly high safety standards in modern motorsport.
