2 Killed when a Train Crashes into a Truck at a Railway Crossing
Two people are dead after a train crashed into a truck at a railway crossing last Friday (March 3) afternoon in the Chilean town of Requinoa, in the central O’Higgins region. Dramatic video footage from a surveillance camera captured the collision. The EFE State Railroad Company said in a news release that the accident took place at 18:03 local time (2100 GMT) at the Las Cabras crossing to the north of Requinoa station. The train, which was heading from Concepcion to Santiago for repairs, was not carrying passengers at the time, local media reported. Requinoa fire commander Cesar Rebolledo said it was not the first time an accident of the sort had taken place in the area. “It has already been the second consecutive time that we have faced this type of accident, here, in the town,” Rebolledo said. Company EFE said in a news release that the train driver’s 52-year-old assistant, Jaime Aliaga, died on impact and train driver, Patricio Salinas was injured. Local media reported that the truck driver, Rene Eduardo Paz Ericez, has also died from the injuries he sustained. He was rescued alive but died hours later at Rancagua Hospital. The causes of the accident will be investigated, company EFE said. However, the surveillance video shows that the truck driver did not respect a signal that read: “Stop.” Drivers have insisted the crossing is very dangerous and said more safety features are needed at the site. “You arrive here at the junction (railroad). Look, the sign that reads: ‘Stop,’ it’s there. You stop over here and can’t see anything. Then, you have to practically advance up to this point next to the tracks to get a visual from there. On top on that, the spot over there also has blocked vision,” said truck driver Carlos Contreras. Another truck driver from the area, Mario Ugarte, also complained about the railway crossing. “You can see the truck is 22 metres (72 feet) long. So (as it crosses the tracks a) part is left in the street. For other drivers it’s very annoying, as it clogs traffic,” Ugarte said. |

Re: 2 Killed when a Train Crashes into a Truck at a Railway Crossing
If the train wasn't speeding for that section of track, me thinks there could be a visibility problem. That truck was barely on the tracks when it got smacked. If you can't see that train coming, then you either need to slow down the train or trim the damn trees. |

Whatever happened to the part of the government that makes roadways safe? There should be warning lights, warning bells, barriers that come down a certain number of minutes before the train actually crosses on that roadway. Pretty simple way to avoid destruction and death like this. |

If you look closely, you can see half of what used to be a human body in the middle of the screen, by the tracks.
