2 couples and dog on pontoon boat dashing down a dam
6/26/2007 AUSTIN, MN - Four people in Austin, Minnesota get the scare of a lifetime while cruising on a pontoon boat Sunday night. The two couples and their dog were approaching a dam when the boat motor stalled. "So we're at the grill and I get a call on the cell phone, "We're on the dam. No kidding, we're on the dam," says Al Lunt, a friend of the family. The pontoon was wedged on top of the dam for about fifteen minutes. Austin firefighters tried to save the helpless boaters. "Just by lifting up the back end it created enough water under the pontoon that it pushed it over the lip of the dam," says Jim Lunt, an Austin Police Officer. "We dashed down here with my pontoon, but there was nothing we could do except watch them go over," he says. "If it flipped, knowing the undertow and knowing how the dam is built, that would have been a bad deal," says Dave Forland, who lives on the river. After the fall, the pontoon sank in to the river. All four passengers and the dog were eventually rescued. The four boaters and the dog are all doing fine |
