17 Injured when Double-decker Bus Plunges in River

A double-decker college bus carrying students from Barton Peveril sixth plunged into the River Itchen in Eastleigh, Hampshire.

17 injured — 3 seriously. Fire crews battled to free trapped teens

A witness told them the bus had suffered mechanical failure, and the brakes had stopped working.

No brakes? How about turning off the engine?

It almost looked like the bus was rushing off to hide somewhere... At least it didn't (quite?) make it INTO the river...

They have a few different methods of braking on buses like that, including huge electromagnetic brake on the propshaft. Someone's in trouble.

Love the totally understated British lad, "oh crumbs, we're going to die, how dashed inconvenient."

It won't change anything.
Beside, the engine is basically on idle, for sure he is not pushing the gas pedal.
