That was a lot of weight to get crushed by, so suffocation would be my guess. Looks like he got some broken bones too which could cause some issues like organ failure, internal bleeding, fat embolism, etc.

He moved right into the path of the largest concentration of falling bags. If he had ducked back the other way, against the pile, he would have been hit by only a few of them and survived easily. Of course, one can't expect such a calculation to be made in a split second under duress.
