The incident happened next to a container yard in Cijin, Kaohsiung. The victim, surnamed Liu, was an employee of an outsourcing contractor, responsible for driving a truck to transport soil and rocks. He had apparently noticed a pothole on the site, and decided to help fill it.

However, when he got out of the truck, he may have forgotten to pull up the handbrake, causing the heavily loaded truck to slowly roll backward. At that moment, Liu happened to be bending down behind the truck, seemingly to check or pick something up, and did not notice the vehicle approaching him, which ultimately resulted in him being crushed.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, Liu showed no signs of breathing or pulse. They immediately performed CPR and rushed him to the hospital, but due to the severity of his injuries, he was pronounced dead. Workers at the site said that Liu had always been the one driving that truck, but they did not understand why he went behind it, especially since there was nothing in particular that needed to be inspected there.
