He didn't purge the tank. At 00:28 he quickly raises his head. This would've been the moment when the vapour in the tank ignites and the flame starts to propagate in the vessel. As this happens, air is sucked inside and the process speeds up, rapidly. It is possible to make a spark inside a vapour filled vessel without incident, but as soon as enough oxygen is introduced, this happens. |
