I am a bit surprised (alright, not really but whatever) about how many people are here kvetching about the baby.

Picking up and messing about with a random injured infant at a crime scene seems like a serious invitation to trouble. Unless you are trained personnel you are not qualified to assess that child's injuries, nor can the child communicate their gravity to you.

Naive bystanders picking it up to 'comfort' it could cause further traumatic injuries. It could also be considered a crime. The baby wasn't in any inherent danger lying there, so suppose someone just came and picked it up and walked away form the scene to 'comfort and calm' the baby? And then...kept on walking...like the cops ( who aren't even on the scene yet) don't have enough to deal with without total strangers wandering off with kidnapped babies, or even the perception thereof?

So without risking injury or misconception of intention, what precisely are they supposed to do? Make funny faces? Dangle a rattle over its face? Sing lullabies as it screams and its mother bleeds out in the car?

I get your human instinct for sympathy. I just don't get the lack of thought behind so many people calling out bystanders for not fucking around with an injured infant that doesn't belong to them. It seems an extremely sensible approach to me.

Cops and EMTs are on their way. Keep an eye on that baby and leave it the fuck alone until they arrive.

I agree with what you're saying but the baby could've been comforted without being manhandled. Just someone sitting next to him, holding/stroking his hand, stroking his head, talking gently to him.

Having a baby screaming for ages would've added more stress to the situation. Either way, hopefully the 2 children are (physically) ok.
