With the blown off hands and scorch marks on his face it looks more like he was carrying something which then exploded, rather than being hit by a mortar shell fired at him. Even if he was treated well enough to stop him dying from blood loss, the damage caused to his brain and internal organs by the blast pressure would likely result in him dying fairly quickly anyway
