Re: Welder Falls from Tanker Car in Repair Shop and Dies

When I was a kid, a professional welder, yet insane mother fucker, neighbor of mine was under his sand-rail welding mounting brackets onto a fuel tank.

My mother gasped and asked him; “are you welding on a gas tank?!” He lifted his mask and said: “yeah, but it’s all cool, the tank is full!”

My mother heard this and while pushing me, nearly ran away, worried that at any moment there was going to be an explosion.

Later I realized that my neighbor was the smart one. Fuel can’t burn without oxygen. Therefore the full fuel tank was practically safe. If the tank was “empty”, full of fuel vapor, that an explosion could have occurred.
