Re: Water Rescue Ends Badly
You'll see plenty of this effect in the US, as there are literally thousands of low flow dams, a surprising number of which are not maintained, and are unmarked. While this one is in a "modern" drainage system, there are plenty of older examples from the 19th century that have fallen out of use. |

Re: Water Rescue Ends Badly
But how do you know which way is downstream? The disorientating effect of the vortex cannot be understated, and I can speak from personal experience just how impossible it can be to self orient in such a situation. To clarify, this was a training exercise, I was in full SCUBA gear, and the waterway where we were training had been cleaned of debris prior to us going in. The instant I entered into the vortex, I was flipped along every axis. It was damn near instant, and even impacting a surface (might have been the bottom, might have been the drop or the side, I have no clue to this day) was a momentary bit of sensory information, and there was no time to orient myself before the vortex pulled me away. The only real inkling I had of up and down came from the tension on my safety line, but most people aren't going to have one of these...or 5 colleagues keeping an eye on them if things go south. Compressing yourself into as small a volume you can is the recommended action. One guy in my team had to ditch his fins while in the vortex, as they were creating too much drag for him to be ejected from the vortex. ...to be honest, it was a blast, and one of the most unique underwater experiences I've ever had. Experiencing it without my gear? Faaaak no! |

For cheap, vertical water-grates can be placed! They are for this very reason. Many places in Europe and NAmerica have them in drainage canals and water run-offs. |

Nah… Would have been very unlikely to survive that and sadly, they did not https://usacrime.com/china-two-offic...d-water-canal/ |
