Re: Water Rescue Ends Badly
There's another term for this effect, drowning machines. Very brief description...I'm a biologist, not a hydrologist. What happens is that you have moving water falling into another pool of water. The direction of flow causes the faster moving water to flow along the bottom of the stream. When it reaches the bottom of the new section, it rebounds up. This creates a vortex effect that can trap any object (animate or inanimate) under the water. If caught in such a flow, the recommendation is to compress yourself into a small a ball as you can, and hope that you get kicked out of the vortex. It's more associated with low flow dams, but the frothing water in the area indicates that the same effect is occurring here. KC posted a comment (in ching chong ching chong language) that purportedly suggests that everything turned out alright (ie, everyone survived). I prefer to cling to that news like a life preserver |

Re: Water Rescue Ends Badly
I feel this. They always call the hydraulic rollers of these low-head stream features “the drowning machine”. This is exactly the reason. Force from falling water pushes you down and the super aerated air in the pool reduces your buoyancy… even with a PFD. My main personal experience with dead bodies is after situations like this, and being on many water rescues that didn’t retrieve a live person from the drowning machine. You… gotta get out before that. Leisurely and calmly floating towards it while weakly grasping a stick is… not the way.
