It’s a “vortex” similar to an “eddy”.
In fluid dynamics, an eddy is the swirling of a fluid and the reverse current created when the fluid is in a turbulent flow regime. Vortex is a region where the flow is spinning about an axis. Eddy is the swirling of a fluid,that creates a space devoid of downstream flowing fluid (like as you say behind an obstacle). In a vortex there is no void,but an area of lower pressure.In both cases there is backflow causing the fluid to rotate.
