Very odd indeed. I thought of three things:

1. Aircraft strafe down the length of the trail that somehow hit everyone (impossible)
2. Some idiot commander said "hold the line exactly here over this 200m stretch of open road" (unlikely, not impossible)
3. They lined them all up, and executed them from a raised position by machine gun.

After your comment though, I think you're right. Looks much more like they were probably gassed.
