Some say why didn't the girl run away? Well, where would she go? I would wager a guess that Vietnam is like other third world countries in the region; if you don't have money for medical care (ie ambulance, surgery, etc.), then, you don't get treated. You (or someone representing you) [i]must[\i] pay upfront. If you die, then, that's your problem. So, she likely stayed where she had friends that could help her (or so she thought). Why others didn't help? We've covered this many times before, so won't go into that here. Search the forum. It sure did look brutal to me and the guy is likely finished UNLESS he has a very rich family. I was in neighboring Laos once and a guy that I had recently befriended was taking me out to karaoke. He was driving like a bat out of hell and I was very scared! I told him to either slow down or let me out immediately as I don't want to die or be present if you kill someone. For the latter part, he said, "Don't worry. If I kill someone, I'll just pay the family." I thought he was joking, but he was absolutely serious. I had a decent time in Laos, but I would never live in poor countries like that. The mindset is totally different in places like that. |
