Substandard cheap bargain basement discount hardware. They probably saved $50...at most. They could have easily created a rig that could have secured him safely for several non-stop circumnavigations of the globe. I have some straps that are rated at 10,000+ pounds that were cheap enough. This was a Death Wish being granted. "Oh, what's the difference? We're only gonna use this rig once anyway." Yeah. True enough. |

No offense, but that statement is completely wrong. Even an aluminum carabiner could have held him easily under those conditions, let alone a steel one. Whatever failed, it wasn't a climbing carabiner.
