It'd be different if a friend or family was being threatened or was taken hostage then yeah maybe a rescue attempt could be in order but this was just stupid, what did he hope to achieve?

Well when there is a guy with a gun, pointing it at you, the worst thing you can do is approach the guy. Maybe if you were already within reach of the gun you could go for it, but certainly not when you are 10 feet away and he is pointing the gun right at you. That's dumb.
