Re: The Ukranian Woman Stabbed on a Train

I’m sorry the fact that no one jumped in to help straight away makes me sick. I would’ve pulled her away so fast then put pressure on the wound straight away. If he goes after me then he goes after me. And I don’t care, I’ll say this as someone who’s mixed. She was attacked for being white, as he left every other person on that train but attacked her.
To think, she left the Ukraine so she could be safe in the U.S is crazy. Before the war, she was much safer in her home country. Let’s be honest here.

Re: The Ukranian Woman Stabbed on a Train

She may not have lived but at least she’d know there’s people who cared about her. Holding her hand and helped her. The look of shock on her face will haunt my mind. Such a senseless crime. I hope they give dread head the death penalty.
If it was up to me, I’d go back to the electric chair for this one. No peaceful way out. Watch them dreadlocks catch on fire!

Re: The Ukranian Woman Stabbed on a Train

How The Lives Of A Ukrainian Refugee And A Charlotte Man With A Criminal History Converged In A Fatal Stabbing

Iryna Zarutska was just another passenger when she boarded the late-night Blue Line train after it pulled into Scaleybark station, just a few miles outside of downtown Charlotte. She wore khaki pants and a dark shirt. Her long blonde hair had been tucked under a hat from Zepeddie’s Pizzeria where she worked. Like nearby passengers, the 23-year-old bowed her head as the train continued on, absorbed by the phone in her hand. Zarutska, a refugee from Ukraine, had picked an empty row, and sat in front of a man in a red sweatshirt, unaware of the two’s imminent collision course. Just four minutes later, Decarlos Brown, the passenger behind her, dug into the fold of his clothes and took out what appeared to be a knife. For a moment, he looked back out the window, as if that was all he was going to do. But in a quick movement, he launched up and swung his arm over the seat and fatally stabbed Zarutska, who clutched her face and throat before slouching to the ground.

Zarutska died on the train from her injuries as passengers kneeled over her trying to help. Brown has been charged with first-degree murder in her killing. In the days after the release of video of the attack, the stabbing and Brown’s lengthy criminal history – including convictions for armed robbery, larceny and breaking and entering – have been decried by the Trump administration and conservative politicians as an example of the violent crime they say plagues many Democrat-led cities across the United States. The crime has become a rallying cry as the administration seeks to justify the deployment of federal troops to Los Angeles and Washington, DC, even as President Donald Trump threatens to deploy the National Guard to Chicago.

“North Carolina, and every State, needs LAW AND ORDER, and only Republicans will deliver it!,” Trump said on Truth Social. He called Brown a “career criminal.”

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles and Brown’s family have both said the killing is in part due to failures of a court system that allowed Brown to re-enter the community despite a record of mental illness, and convictions for armed robbery, felony larceny and breaking and entering. Ultimately, the paths of two people fatally converged – a woman who escaped violence only to face it in the US and a man whose family members believe he was failed by both the criminal justice and the health care system.

Zarutska embraced US life

Zarutska had a gift. Her mother called it an “artist’s gift.” It wasn’t her ability to sculpt or design clothes – though she loved to do that. Zarutska, who had a degree in art and restoration from Synergy College in Kyiv, often bestowed her art on family and friends. Her “artist’s gift” was what her mother affectionately called her ability to sleep for “wonderfully long stretches.” She was a homebody, and “happiest when surrounded by family and loved ones,” her family said in her obituary. Zarutska left Ukraine in August 2022, six months after Russia invaded, to escape the war.

Lonnie, a family friend, told CNN affiliate WCNC Zarutska endured daily bombing in Ukraine and the agony of not knowing “if you’re going to live or breathe another day.” She fled with her mother, sister and brother, found a home in North Carolina and embraced life in Charlotte. She attended Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant. “She often cared for her neighbors’ pets, and many fondly remember seeing her walking them through the neighborhood, always with her radiant smile,” her family said.

Zarutska worked in a lively area of the lower South End dotted with breweries, apartment complexes and coffee shops. The 2007 debut of the light rail system helped fuel the neighborhood’s rise. She had been inching toward independence and learning to drive, they said. But in the meantime, she would take the train.

‘I knew he was battling’

Days before the stabbing, Brown, showed up at his mother’s house. Michelle Dewitt said her son, who was homeless and living at a local shelter, asked to stay the night. Later that morning, Brown’s mother dropped him off at a Statesville Avenue shelter, a few miles away from the Scaleybark station. She hugged him and told her son she loved him, she said, before heading to church. When she found out about the stabbing and his arrest, Dewitt couldn’t believe it was her son. She had kicked him out before for becoming too violent, she told CNN affiliate WSOC. But still, she thought the identification of her son as a suspect must have been a mistake. But Brown, who had a history of mental health issues, had been struggling in recent years, she said.

His sister, Tracey Brown, said he had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and suffered hallucinations and paranoia. Decarlos Brown had spent more than five years in prison for robbery with a dangerous weapon. And when he got out in 2020, his sister said she felt she was dealing with a different person.

“He didn’t seem like himself,” Tracey Brown said. Her brother struggled to have simple conversations and couldn’t hold down a job. He would sometimes become aggressive. Decarlos attacked his sister in 2022, she told CNN. He bit her and broke the hinges of a door, but the sister said she decided to drop the charges out of concern for his mental health issues.

“I knew he was battling something,” Tracey Brown said. But the family struggled to get him help for his mental health.

Their mother had tried to get Brown placed in a long-term facility, Tracey Brown told CNN, but her attempts failed because she wasn’t his guardian. He told his sister multiple times the government had implanted a chip in him, she said. Earlier this year, Brown asked officers to investigate a “man-made” material that controlled when he ate, walked and talked, court documents state. Officers told Brown “the issue was a medical issue,” and there was nothing more they could do. Upset, he called 911. Brown was charged with misuse of 911, a class 1 misdemeanor. His release was conditioned on a written promise he would appear for his next hearing, according to court records. The White House said his release left him “free to slaughter an innocent woman.”

Tracey Brown believes her brother suffered a disastrous mental break that night. Video of the attack shows Brown fidgeting and restless. He nodded his head, then shook it. He sat, with his hood pulled over his long hair, abruptly upright and then slouched forward to rest his head on the seat in front of him. Occasionally, he swayed back and forth. Finally, he attacked Zarutska, who had just boarded the train minutes prior. Charlotte had been her refuge from the violence abroad, but now Zarutska lost her life there.

“It’s very, very sickening and sad that we have such evil in our society today,” Lonnie, the family friend said.

Brown later told his sister he attacked the woman because she was reading his mind.

“A person that is hearing voices in their head and believes the world is against them, they’re going to break,” she told CNN.

“And I think that night he broke.”

Re: The Ukranian Woman Stabbed on a Train

Damnit, my OCD wouldn't let me wait.

• 2011-early 2014: First 6-7 arrests were dismissed by the district attorneys. They were for speeding, threatening, and injuring property.

•April 2014: Brown plead guilty to two 2013 charges of felony larceny and breaking and entering. Two years probation.

•August 2014: Robbery with a deadly weapon. 5 years 7 months in prison. 1 year parole.

•September 2022: Assault on a female and injury to property.

•April 2024: Misusing 911. Posted a $500 bond.

.•May 2024: Misusing 911.

•January 2025: Misusing 911. He was released with no cash bond on a written statement he would appear in court. In July 2025, the Judge approved the defense attorneys order for a mental evaluation. Defendant was supposed to present himself to Alliance Health within 7 days of the order being approved. He did not. Less than a month later he killed Iryna. Now he is being held on no bond and was approved again for the order for a mental evaluation.

*Edited to add a word for sentence structure. :)
Schizophrenia in males typically presents somewhere between 20 and 24 years of age.

He was born in 1991 and his first criminal offense was in 2011 at the age of 20. Mostly small stuff, as you said, but still obviously problematic. Over the next 3 years he graduated to a lot of B&E, larceny, robbery, etc. Then prison time. Probably had his first psychotic break inside, though it could also have been a precipitating factor for the recent escalation to violent crimes that sent him there.

The arrest in 2022 was his sister, for which she chose not to press charges due to him already being diagnosed as a schizophrenic at that point. Fucking shame she was unable/unwilling to get him proper help at that time. It can be pretty hard though, getting PoA on an adult. Hs mother may have had better luck, but obviously was in denial or just unwilling.

In any case, he obviously suffered significant mental deterioration after being released. Though it's a bit odd that the parole board didn't pick up on any of it. If he'd been exhibiting schizoid behavior inside, they'd have likely been informed. But he almost had to be, as the condition appearing suddenly in a male who was almost 30 years old would be quite rare.

He was obviously on a bad path to begin with, though without juvenile records it's hard to say. Because even way back in 2011, he'd have been right on track for a psychotic break at age 20. It likey just didn't get picked up on.

It's a shame all around. It's very possible this awful murder could have been prevented if this guy had been committed (by himself in lucidity or by his family, even by the state after the first violent offense) to an institution years earlier. But sending him to prison for 5 years only made the condition markedly worse.

I know two diagnosed schizophrenics in my personal life. Both are intelligent, articulate high-functioning members of society. IF they take their meds. And both of them had family and medical support when they started presenting symptoms in their early 20s.

It is a treatable condition in most cases. If it was a primary reason why this tragedy occurred it is all the more tragic for how easily it could have been prevented.

Re: The Ukranian Woman Stabbed on a Train

I mean, this has been international news all week. You can read plenty of background at your personal choice of news outlets. The spin may be different one to another, but the facts are largely the same.

The perpetrator is a diagnosed schizophrenic. Has been for years. He has a history of both violent and non-violent crime. Most of it relating to his mental illness, which is diagnosed, severe, and debilitating.

His most recent jail time before this was for calling 911 dozens of times and trying to get them to send police to cut a government blackbox device out of his brain that was forcing him to eat weird shit and hear things.

He violently attacked his sister several years ago, but she declined to press charges because she was worried that he'd just wind up in prison instead of in the hospital. Instead, he wound up back on the streets, homeless, delusional, and psychotic.

His statement to the police was that he attacked this girl on the train because he could feel her reading his mind and he thought she was another undercover government agent re-writing his free will.

He's crazy as a rat in a tin shithouse and for whatever reason, the various safeguards our society has in place to get him the meds and supervision he needs to not be a raving madman all failed multiple times.

So yeah, I understand that y'all get triggered as fuck watching a big black bull cut up a pretty little blonde girl. And that many of you think he needs to be tortured and killed slowly because, well...I guess that's the America y'all want to be living in today.

And yes, the crime itself is ghastly and horrible. It was awful to watch and it never should have happened. He needs to be taken off the streets so he can't hurt anyone ever again.

But he is crazy. Certifiably, diagnostically crazy. Not pretending to be crazy to get off the hook for this awful crime. But completely bonkers for years and years with legal and medical records to verify it.

Historically, our justice system is not really designed to execute crazy people who 99 out of 100 psychologists will tell you are NOT in possession of their faculties.

Not that most of you self-righteous ghouls care and I get that. You're not alone in that. The government you elected doesn't care either, beyond using him as a new Willy Horton to bolster their position about instituting Martial Law and illegally designating our armed forces as an ad hoc police force to be 'tough on crime.'

I don't care much either, I suppose. Meds will probably calm this guy down, but what's the point? I guess he can get enough thorazine pumped into him to make birdhouses in jail for all the good that does anyone. I don't feel sorry for him. But at the same time, he didn't do this just to be a dick. He did it because his brain is fractured like a fucking eggshell.

Anyway, I have been on this site enough decades to know that there's no calming you bloodthirsty, racist fuckers when you see a big homeless black guy kill a blonde refugee. Even though a good half to three quarters of you would gladly have deported her back to her warzone country to die in a drone strike while your president cuts most of their military aid.

So, y'all pretend for a while not to be hypocrites and jerk each other off about how many different ways you want this dumb crazy fucker to get tortured before he finally dies. He's probably better off for it and doubtless the world is, as well.

But FFS, it'd be nice if even a few of you took the time to read the actual background on this crime and this case before foaming at the mouth about melting the guy's face off or taking razorblades to his balls.
I think you’re being reasonable in saying that he was crazy and that’s ultimately why he carried out the attack, but that doesn’t rule out the likelihood that it was racially motivated either. They’re not mutually exclusive, I think it’s probably a combination of both.

This man has most likely been told his entire life that the “white people in power” are trying to put him down, that they’re not to be trusted, and so on. Similarly whites are told not to trust black people, but I think generally people are rightfully more likely to be challenged for being racist when that happens.

So I don’t think it’s a coincidence the CIA operative responsible for placing a mind reading nanobot in his brain just happened to be white, and his peers probably bare some responsibility for that. Society enabled the line of thinking that led to this girl dying, and just to clarify, I think the people trying to weaponise this death to stir up racial tension against black people are also just further enabling the next racist lunatic (white or black) that heads out and murders somebody, and they bare the same responsibility.

Just my two cents.

Did he cut himself while stabbing her? I heard people say it was blood dripping off the knife but at the end when he's taking his shirt off it seems like more than just a dripping off the knife amount
