Some people can't while others are either desensitized or don't care. Unfortunately western culture is starting to get this way. There was a car on fire in a parking lot the other day. Three people were trying to put it out with extinguishers. And about 20 standing watching or driving by. When I got there and got my little extinguisher out (my dad's a firefighter so awesome gift), the fire trucks were on scene.

And no one moved. They just stood and watched and kind of blocked the scene when the other truck showed up. I got in my car and drove off in full disgust.
