Colombia. Two teenage girls on a bike died from electrocution last night after heavy storm winds knocked high-voltage power lines onto them.

The tragic accident occurred as the young women, Ana S. A. B. and Andrea C. C. C, were riding a motorcycle during a severe storm that brought wind gusts up to 72 km/h.

The girls left their homes to buy hot dogs before the worst part of the storm arrived and as the rain intensified, they temporarily sought shelter, waiting for the weather to clear. Believing it was safe to return home, they got back on their motorcycle when a sudden gust of wind knocked down power lines that fell on them.

Neighbors rushed outside after hearing screams amid the storm. However, the rescue efforts were severely hampered by total darkness from local blackouts and the immediate danger of live, sparking wires on the wet ground.

Once the area was secure enough, neighbors managed to remove the cables and rush both teenagers to the nearby health clinic but medical staff confirmed that both girls arrived with no vital signs.

Judicial authorities and the local power company, have launched a technical investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the failure and evaluate if proper infrastructure maintenance could have prevented the snap. The storm caused widespread damage, including collapsed roofs, dozens of fallen trees and extensive power outages.
