Well it's because of the contradictions in the book. Yes it does state what you just said, but it also states to murder apostates, infidels, blasphemers, homosexuals, and adulterers to name a few. Some people follow certain parts and ignore certain parts, while others follow the opposite. Basically they follow the parts that they want to apply. Kinda how Christians in USA often proclaim the abomination of homosexuality because the bible says so, yet they quite willfully eat shellfish which is also forbidden. It's more of a "follow whatever you like" attitude towards their own books.
