I have no doubt this guy had at least a few "WTF JUST HAPPENED" seconds.

Of course, those seconds were mostly his head flipping through space, and the situation was completely out of nowhere, so I don't know if he had any time to have any idea what the fuck was going on or if it was just pure "WTF" chaos, but I have no doubt he was at least somewhat aware that something insane just happened before he went black.

Same, I've done a LOT of studying on it.

Until we have someone make a high-def video of a head that's secured in place with cameras zoomed in and cleanly and switfly beheaded, we'll never know the truth.

But I've absolutely seen a handful of clean beheadings where there is 100% no doubt some amount of consciousness for at least a bit.

The most stark one is an ISIS beheading where a guy takes a sword to the neck, his head rotates once before impacting the ground. And you can very clearly see his face react to impact with the ground, but to me the most "sure thing" part is that an instant after his head hits the ground, the blood from his neck starts to slam into his face and you can VERY clearly see him react exactly like a conscious person would to their face getting splashed with their own blood.

My gut instinct is that if you could somehow cleanly behead someone and then had their head held in place, you'd see a brief moment of shock and then several seconds of clear consciousness, minimum, which would slowly fade.

I'm sure the person would spend a good 30+ seconds in a subconscious state of "feeling" something, having weird dreams or whatever, until it all goes away.

Side note, in a very, very dark and morbid way:

The two main issues are loss of oxygen to the brain, and loss of blood pressure.

The brain has a decent 10-15 seconds worth of oxygen to keep you functioning somewhat "normally" mentally before it starts to fall apart. Not much you can do about that.

The bigger issue is rapid loss of blood pressure and losing consciousness and the general shock of it all, etc.

If you *really* wanted to be a dick, you'd rig something up where it beheads the person but locks in place. Like, a horizontal guillotine where the blade slices their neck clean but then just sits there locked in place and prevents blood loss.

I'm pretty positive that this would allow for a pretty disturbing and lengthy period of true consciousness.
