Ecuador. The murder of traffic officer Víctor F. V. G. 26, occurred 29 days after the murder of his colleague.

The hitman was riding alone, on a motorcycle this morning when he stopped next to a car. The victim was dropping his wife off at the scene.

When he saw the hitman he left the car and ran around ducking for the bullets but in the end he collapsed and died in the presence of family members who witnessed the tragedy.

Police responded to the scene and collected 10 bullet casings. Authorities cordoned off the area to begin an investigation. So far, the perpetrator has not been identified, nor have the motives for the hitman been clarified.

This crime brings the number of traffic officers killed in the city to 10 since 2022.

A wave of violence that has also affected officials associated with the Municipal Transit Agency, such as a supervisor and a former director.

The killings against traffic agents began 3 years ago with the murder of Hugo, president of the Traffic Agents Association. He was shot while playing soccer.

Since then, the list of victims includes Jimmy, Klever, Eduardo, Luis, Andrés, Brallan, Diego D.M, Diego V.Á, Ulises and now Víctor.

In addition, supervisor Geamil , brother of the ex-wife of Los Choneros leader Jorge Luis Zambrano (alias “Rasquiña”), and Joseph, former director of the agency, were also murdered by hitmen in 2024.

The violence against these officials continues unabated. One particular and serious case occurred on May 18, 2023. That day, hitmen stormed the wake of Andrés at a funeral home. They fired indiscriminately, leaving four dead and 16 wounded , including two children.

In the case of Geamil, who was murdered on March 18, 2024 , authorities found a pamphlet signed by "Los Pepes," a criminal faction that answers to "Los Lobos," threatening officials linked to Los Choneros.

This group, along with Los Lobos, has been linked to the growing influence of drug trafficking in Manabí , where Manta is a strategic hub due to its port, key to drug trafficking. They have also been linked to several hitmen.

Investigations point to possible links between the hitmen and the infiltration of criminal gangs into the Municipal Transit Agency.

According to police reports, some of the slain officers were accused of corruption, such as Andrés M, whose home was found with $120,000 in cash and firearms. Geamil R, meanwhile, was facing charges of bribery and weapons possession.

Authorities suspect the crimes could be retaliation by drug trafficking groups such as Los Choneros or Los Pepes over disputes related to extortion or illicit money.

Traffic officers , who became part of the Municipal Public Mobility Company in 2021, face a climate of terror, with some opting to work remotely. This is also true for Ulises, who survived a hitman attempt in April 2025 before being killed on May 9.
