I was working in the emergency room in Fresno, just before Christmas of 1978. Same scenario. A Mexican guy, probably about 22, or so. He got hung up in the PTO of a farm tractor. It took his legs (not quite a bad as this), but parts of his spine was visible, and his ear was torn off. I was traumatized by the evening at the ER, for a very long time. I was an EMT in training, and quite unprepared for the experience. He had leaves and grass, etc. embedded in the wounds. It was awful.

You seeing the carnage was a necessary step to take him from a world of pain, back into a safe reality. Seeing you was one of the best moments of his life after what he had experienced.
Be proud that you were there for him.
