They have no concept of change in his behavior. The man was talking like a mentor but the punishment was overkill. The man's crime was spending a lot of (the gang's) money on boots for his girlfriend. It actually says that multiple times "I did it for love" which they mock him for

See ……… I've been over in the watercooler, completing my PhD in Trolling - and haven't spent a lot of time here lately. The downside of this recent binge, is that I miss cracking jokes with some of the funnier more quick witted members here. The upside is that I forgot about the ones riding the short yellow bus, like you. I've spat so much venom out over in the WC recently, that I might take it easier on you for a while in here Ruthie7.
