The family of a man who was shot dead by police in Colorado while suffering a mental health crisis will receive a $19m (£15.3m) settlement.

The payment from both state and local authorities is the largest lawsuit settlement in Colorado's history.

The agreement, which was announced on Tuesday, also mandates local police to create a crisis response team and boost training in crisis intervention.

Christian Glass was killed by a sheriff's deputy last June.

His death drew national attention and prompted calls to reform how police respond to people with mental health issues.

A former Colorado sheriff’s deputy was convicted Thursday in the shooting death of a 22-year-old man in distress who called 911 for help after his car got stuck in a small mountain community.

Jurors found Andrew Buen guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the June 2022 death of Christian Glass, whose death drew national attention and led to changes in how officers are trained to respond to people in mental health crises under a $19m settlement with his family.

Murder convictions of police officers for actions taken while they were on duty are rare and have happened only nine times in the United States over the past two decades, according to the criminal justice expert Philip Stinson at Bowling Green State University.

Prosecutors alleged that Buen needlessly escalated a standoff with Glass, who showed signs of a mental health crisis and refused orders to get out of his SUV near the small town of Silver Plume.

The piglet that murdered him got 3 years in prison.

I find it very unusual how everyone is in the comments talking about this being a mental health crisis and that cops should've handled things better. That was a young man clearly having a mental episode. The cops started off handling it quite well. But it soon turned into an over the top dick swinging event. No need for the bean bags, no need to shoot him 5 times. Window smashing and tasing would have been enough. Absolutely disgusting!
