Re: Teenager Found Hanged High Up in a Tree

Some people like to perch pretty high to hang themselves

If I went that high, I would long-drop as well, way quicker with a chance of decapitation if the rope is thin and solid enough

I've wondered about how decap actually plays out. I've read about studies (too formal a term perhaps, but let's say careful observations) of victims of the guillotine at the time of the Terror. It was said that eye movements and changes in facial expression were observed with some severed heads. Can you imagine having the thought: "that's my body over there?"

Was it a broken heart that lead to a broken neck?

One notorious case where a physician attempted to prove (with pretty shitty indicators, even for the time) that consciousness and control of certain bodily functions persisted for some time after decapitation is the Henri Languille case, if that's of interest to you.

Legend has it that the head actually reacted

It makes sense that consciousness would persist at least for a few seconds. When the blood supply to the brain is cut off via strangulation (the carotid artery is compressed) it takes 5 - 10 seconds for the victim to lose consciousness.

Oh, I didn't want to look like I was denying these claims. I find them pretty credible, although there are also reasons to believe that this consciousness is minimal.

(I'm talking out my ass here, no medical backing whatsoever )
For example the severance of the base of the spine / brain stem is likely to forbid control of most muscles of the face and, conversely, sensory input to the brain. Residual neurological currents / information may cause some twitching and eye movement, but I don't even think one can process pain in this state ; the disorientation and sheer shock of losing sensory input from 97% of the body would be sufficient to overload the brain for the time it takes it to shut off completely
Again, I'm just doing some "thought wanking" here. I don't claim any knowledge other than my superiority complex.

Those are all good points. Note, however, that thought per se is not dependent upon sensory input to the brain. It may be purely reflective. Also, the visual system is not immediately interrupted. Likewise hearing.

Like you, I'm merely speculating with zero medical knowledge. My son is a biomedical engineer, and I'll have to ask him his opinions when I see him.
