WTF. The stupid things athletes do to try to shave their lap times.  If one has the willpower to hold their breath until they pass out, most bodies will have motor responses to try to recover respiration. Unfortunately, this guy held his breath in the wet. 3:20-3:40 His subconscious motor response kicked in. His body exhaled all of the gases from his lungs, expecting to breath in air. Instead he inhaled water, filling his lungs. 3:40-3:53 Drowning continues. Just trying to inhale. 3:53 He got his mouth out of water for a fraction of a second, but his lungs were full of water and he had no void space to draw in air. He filled his mouth cavity with a little air and expelled that shortly after. With no gases in his lungs for buoyancy, he dropped to the bottom of the pool. All these are classic physical steps drowning, except he was never fully conscious for any of it. |
