The bubbles were probably leftover air trapped in the lungs. When deep, the water pressure would compress the air into tiny bubbles but as the bodies were brought to shallower depth, those bubbles will expand in size and eventually escape.

This is clearly open water with direct sunlight. In cave diving everything is pitch black… hence you need torches.

If the ship rolls over, you can get trapped. The life vest will push you against a bulkhead or deck and you can't swim downward to get free.
