Re: Suicide Jump for the Eiffel Tower

Damn! Lost another cafe loafer...maybe even a taxpayer. But saved paying his pension starting age 60, and a good workout for sedentary rescue personnel.

UPDATE: longer version of the video here:

<iframe frameborder="0" width="480" height="360" src="http://www.dailymotion.com/embed/video/x5r74r"></iframe><br /><a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x5r74r_intervention-grep_sport" target="_blank">Intervention GREP</a> <i>by <a href="http://www.dailymotion.com/counterghost" target="_blank">counterghost</a></i>

Translation from 7:01 to 8:59:

Rescuer with cam: You’re doing that over someone you love, no? Think about that person.
Main rescuer (Xavier): So we’re going to have a talk together?
Rescuer with cam: I think that person wouldn’t agree with what you’re doing.
Xavier: Can I come over there, to speak with you, and I mean that seriously.
Narrator: It’s Xavier who arrives first. He’s the only one who approaches so as not to upset Yanik, but he hasn’t taken the time to secure himself.
Xavier: I won’t play any tricks on you.
Rescuer with cam: Yanik! (the jumper’s name).
Xavier: We’re here to tal…
Yanik: It’s too late
Xavier: No, it’s not too late; it’s never too late. I’ve come to talk with you.
(Various other rescuers say “Yanik” one after another at this point).
Rescuer with cam (to Yanik): It won’t achieve anything, what you’re going to do.
Xavier: I’m come to talk with you.
Rescuer with cam: Sit there, and he’ll come and talk to you.
Xavier: Sit down or…(unclear)
Rescuer with cam (to other rescuers): Don’t move over there, stay there, don’t move.
Xavier: They’re our colleagues…ok? I’m going to come and sit facing you. Ok. Yanik. Ok, we’ll shake hands. No tricks. I’m Xavier, Yanik. I won’t do…I’ll sit facing you.
Yanik: You know this is going to end badly.
Xavier: Why? There’s no… (not clear) …there. Don’t you think? We’ll talk together. We’ll talk about your problems now.
Yanik: It's over.
Xavier: What's over? I’m going to move to there. No problems. Do you see the drop there? We’re not going to jump together.
Yanik. No, no. You, you…
Xavier: I’m going to secure myself first. I’m securing myself. Me, I have a family, with children. I’ve three children. So, we’ll talk about the problems. I’ll secure myself first.
Other rescuer (to other rescuers): No, just him, you up there! (various voices for a second, then to Yanik) It’s just him who’ll talk with you.
Xavier: Let go of me there! I’m not secured me. I’m not secured.
Yanik: Well, secure yourself.
Xavier: Wait, WAIT! No, hold the hand.
Narrator: The young man removes his pullover so his rescuer can’t get a good grip.
Yanik (calmly): Let me go. Let me go. Please.
Xavier, Ok, wait, Yanik.
Crowd below: Eeeayyeeaaaiiiaaayyy!
Xavier: LADS!
Narrator: Xavier catches him by his belt, but the young man unbuckles it.
Xavier: AHH!
Crowd below: Eeeayyeeaaaiiiaaayyy… (continuing)
Xavier: Ahh!
Other rescuer: Fucking shit!!

That’s about as close as I can get. Some of what Yanik (the jumper) says is too faint for my English ears.

Re: Suicide Jump for the Eiffel Tower

i think thats FUCKING SELFISH of the jumper!! All they do is thinking about their own issues while creating more for relatives, close people, family or even rescuers!
Yeah... maybe... I just wonder though if that man was in a mental state where he could recognise that.

Re: Suicide Jump for the Eiffel Tower

Listen to the herd of cattle screaming as he slips. Some people just can't remain calm in a situation that depends on it.

That's ok. I didn't mean to imply any criticism of your translation when I contributed mine. It is very difficult to translate into a non-native language and I wouldn't have the courage to post an English to French translation on a French language forum, for example (native to non-native for me), never mind non-native to non-native translation like you did. I know that professional translators usually only translate into their native language(s) from other languages (I'm doing a masters in translation at the moment and we've had presentations from professional agencies during the course and that's what they advised us).
