it looks like a .22? i think it's cause he's not exactly dead yet and he's feeling the bullet bounce around in his brain which he wasn't expecting

Concussion, basically. Brain gets shocked to the point where it shuts off, either from the shock or from being completely obliterated. The peripheral nervous system then basically fires off all at once because the moderating effect of the brain is gone. All the muscles go rigid, and you get that posture.
