They probably did this in the past and expected the train to stop earlier, or expected their position to be farther to the back of the train. Their behavior confirms this IMO; they were walking pretty chill whereas earlier they had good situational awareness |

That would explain it because there's no way they couldn't have seen it. Like the old saying goes: "When you assume, it makes a corpse out of you and me". (or something to that effect) |
