I wonder if he can still 'feel' his legs (aka phantom pain). You hear about that stuff with amputees who can still "feel" limbs after they've gone because the nerves play tricks (and sometimes they have dreams with the limbs back on them!). This used to happen with my late grandfather who was an amputee.
