Re: Sri-Lankan Monk Self-immolation, Unedited Version
I’m surprised to say this but I was touched by the humanity of all the people trying to help him. Sri Lanka has been politically stressful and I think people on the street and the military were wary that of each other. Everyone seemed to response to this event as if it were non-political and a purely humanitarian disaster. They are brown people and speak a different language so it’s easy to mock them. But you could find a lot more bystander effect on the streets of a Western city. People are particularly affected when monks protest - here and similarly in Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia etc. They know it is the canary in the coal mine that dies before all goes to hell. He was such a clearly intelligent and lucid man. Very brave. |
