Any reason why it would have killed the magpie?

Saying that, i'm glad he put him in the water the sound was pissing me off.
Predatory birds usually kill on impact. It's more difficult to transport a screaming, kicking, wing-flapping meal than a limp noodle and if it is intended for the feeding of babies there is a serious threat of injury to the young. I've seen many BOP's kill prey but this IS amazing.

It is a bird of prey and the sparrowhawks like most kill and eat other birds and rodents even fish.
