first of all it was only 2 police men killed and yes their service pistols were taken and recovered in the aftermath after the crowd had dispersed. They had fired on police with those guns. Secondly something westerners will probably find laughable but which is a very serious reality in South Africa is witch doctors. A witch doctor had blessed the miners that day and told them they would be invisible to the police and that the police' guns would jam and not fire. It sounds ridiculous i know but those miners honestly believed it. They had every intention of attacking the police that day. Still a terrible tragedy but its good to know what the mindset of the people involved were.
