THE tenants at Bishopsgate flats in Anton Lembede Street, Durban woke up to devastating news on Sunday morning.
One of the tenants, Thobeka Jili, had jumped from the ninth floor of the building. She was found on the street with her head almost ripped open.
This happened after the 23-year-old woman screamed and ran around the flats, saying there were people following her.
Since Sunday, rumours have been circulating that Thobeka was drunk and that probably resulted in her seeing things that other people didn’t see.
Her concerned friend, who wished not to be named, dismissed the rumours and described her friend as a very responsible woman.
“I have spoken to more than two people who saw her before her death. They confirmed that she was sober.
“ I think she needed someone to talk to about something that troubled her.
“At the moment, no one knows exactly what happened because she didn’t leave a note,” the friend said.
Mabusi Nhleko (31) said they thought Thobeka was joking when she stormed into her flat and said there were people following her.
“While I was still shocked by what she was saying, she quickly ran out and broke a window on the ninth floor. “Then she jumped out of it.
“That was a terrible moment for all of us. It left everyone feeling traumatised,” said Mabusi.
Major Thulani Zwane said an inquest docket was opened at Durban Central Police Station.
