They are army. Not marines.
It was the 507th maintenance company out of Ft Bliss TX. This particular platoon out of the company was what is referred to s the "headquarters" platoon, mechanics, cooks, supply clerks, etc. They are by no means front line combat troops. I knew the company very well. I was in their motorpool office at least 2-4 times week. No I did not know anyone in the video.

What happened:
I will give you the short version. This maintenance company was the last in convoy of over 600 vehicles. after having to stop numerous time to help broke down vehicles, they were fr behind and had nobody to follow. the commander missed a turn and , in some people's eyes, committed the one sin of the whole fiasco: he crossed the Euphrates river which was not supposed to be crossed at all by the actual convoy route. Realizing his mistake, he u-turned the entire convoy (twice actually), told his people to "lock and load" and attempted to re-cross the lines back to the friendly side.

The Fight.
The Iraqis fighters were clearly not prepared for them. the convoy drove past their positions unmolested - an Iraqi guard at a guardpost even waived to them. However on the way out it was not as easy. The lighter faster vehicles were able to run through the checkpoints but the slower bulkier vehicles were torn to shreds by enemy fire.
