Theres a small black something on the slope he's sliding down right at the start. It looks as if he tries to grab it, but you can see it fall. This is just a theory, but maybe he, or one of his friends threw something up there, a wallet or something, and he went up there to get it back. It could explain the incredible stupidity of his actions.
