Six Killed when a Train Rams a Car Crossing the Train Tracks
Mexico, Six people died and two were injured in two crashes that occurred Wednesday morning, when a locomotive became detached from its convoy, traveled more than a kilometer without a driver, and hit several vehicles at railroad crossings. Locomotive 4601 was coupled to the end of a convoy of wagons traveling toward Guadalajara, however, when it separated from the other wagons, it advanced without an operator due to the inertia of speed, colliding with two cars, a van, and a motorcycle. The first impact occurred around 11:45 a.m. at the intersection with Florencia Street, where the locomotive collided sideways with a dark gray Sentra car, apparently part of the Uber platform. The three passengers died instantly, including a 55-year-old woman and a man of approximately 49. The driver was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, where he is reported to be in serious condition. The car was dragged several meters in the opposite direction of the road, with severe damage to the entire front and right side. Minutes later, a second crash occurred at the intersection of Paseo Irapuato and Mariano J. García Avenue, under the bridge in the Primero de Mayo neighborhood. Because the signal booms were up, motorists crossed the tracks without noticing the approaching locomotive, causing it to hit a white Nissan pickup truck loaded with construction materials. Lumps of cement, rods, castles, hoses, pieces of Styrofoam, and other objects were left scattered around the site. A white Nissan March carrying a woman was also crashed there . Seconds later, a motorcyclist was struck and dragged by the machine for several meters until he was left dead in some crops. A few meters away, the Primero de Mayo street market was taking place, and dozens of people came to help the victims. Residents from surrounding neighborhoods and students from the Irapuato Institute also arrived. They pulled the driver from the truck and placed him on the side of the vehicle; however, he died a few seconds later. The co-driver died instantly inside the vehicle. The woman traveling in the white March suffered only bruises on her body and was taken to a city hospital where she is reported to be in stable condition. After the second collision, locomotive 4601 continued on its way for several meters, until it collided with the last car in the Roma neighborhood . Apparently, the driver stopped near the Horizontes subdivision after being informed of the accidents. He remained inside the locomotive until higher authorities from Ferromex and the Municipal Police arrived, who intervened to protect him, since it was speculated that several people were trying to hit him. |

High balling! That’s a lot of weight traveling pretty fast. I was under the impression there were safety features in the engineer’s cabin to prevent this kind of thing. |
