Re: SITAR WARS IV: A New Hope
If it makes you feel any better, the extant archaeological evidence suggests scimitars are ultimately derived from the cavalry swords of a band of Turko-Mongol nomads who ranged the Eastern Steppe contemporary to the Roman Republic. The Han Chinese called them "Hu", but that's really a catch-all term for nomadic groups. Today we call them Xiongnu. Regardless, they play a significant role in history by their development of a particular flavor of Mongol Steppe shamanism we now call Tengrism, meaning a direct line can be drawn over some thousand years to Genghis Khan. I bring this up to point out that the shamanism of the Eastern Steppe is entirely distinct in origin from the Proto-Indo-European shamanism of the Western Steppe - which would develop into the mythology of classical antiquity in Europe, and the Vedic religions of the Indus valley. As such, the culture of the Xiongnu originators of the "proto-scimitar" has no attested genetic relationship to cultures of the Indian subcontinent, so saying "Scimitar Wars" would make about as much sense as a penguin living in an igloo with a polar bear. |
