Shop Thief Shot Dead by Ex-officer
This afternoon (27th October 2018) in Arujá. A retired police officer noticed a man stealing in a shop. The ex-officer walked over to the wannabe thief + aimed his gun at him. The thief was shot + died at the scene. *I've read that the officer is in a serious condition at the hospital. From the video, it doesn't look like the thief got a chance to retaliate but the ex-officer appears to have a wound to his abdomen, that a man in the shop looks at. Maybe he was shot or stabbed?

Re: Shop Thief Shot Dead by Ex-officer
For a "veteran retired" police officer, that seemed like an awfully dumb course of action to me. He put himself into a position where it would have been too easy for the perpetrator to have reacted like that and so he got himself hurt.

Re: Shop Thief Shot Dead by Ex-officer
You need to think about fire lanes though. While not IDEAL by no means, he started.. across the room. He could not safely put the man down without substantial risk of hitting one of the innocent men. Also was far enough away that you aren't necessarily capable of "Stop, freeze, drop it, this is the police" with the assurance that you can put him down before he hurts a bystander. Unfortunately, I think "close the distance - and close it fast - and try to detain" was the best course of action for civilian life. |

The officer was shot in the right arm and abdomen but survived. One article mentioned there were two criminals and one escaped. Maybe that one was standing outside on the look out.

Re: Shop Thief Shot Dead by Ex-officer
Cop forgot to utilize the OODA Loop. He should have closed the distance to about 20ft and then yelled at him to drop his guard. Then he’d be at a reasonable distance to accurately avoid civilian casualties, he could have utilized cover if needed, and he’d be in a safe distance of the assailant had a knife. He also could use deescalation tactics at that distance, possibly saving the life of the assailant too. Or... just blow his brains out from behind and fill out some paperwork. Either works, really. |
