A Sudanese woman was flogged in the street for travelling in a car.

This shocking video shows the moment a Sudanese woman was flogged in the street because she got into a car with man who wasn't a relative. The footage shows the Sudanese woman cower and call out in pain. A police officer meted out the punishment under strict 'public order' law. The crowd watches without protesting or intervening.

The crime that prompted this horrendous assault? She had ridden in a car with a man who she wasn't related to, an offense that is prohibited by Sudan's public order law.

The video is believed to have been taken in Khartoum, the capital, and shows the terrified and bewildered woman crying out in pain as lash after vicious lash rains down.

The video was sent to a journalist under anonymity in order to show the world the barbaric practices carried out for what is nothing less than a ridiculous crime and one that is draconian in this day and age.

In the video the police officer lines up yet another vicious attack and tells the woman, believed to be named Halima, ‘This is so you don’t get into cars anymore.’

The Governor of Khatoum, Abdul Rahman Al Khidir was questioned over the public flogging in which he told reporters that it appeared that the flogging might not have been carried out properly however the punishment under Sharia Law was rightfully carried out and indeed justified.

Human Rights groups have condemned the flogging stating that the punishment was subject to a draconian law under article 152 of the Sharia Law penal codes which stipulates that any conduct or clothing violation of public decency be punished with 40 lashes.

Saw on multiple sources they were claiming this was Sharia law - I'm not an expert and don't know.

What do you reckon the woman did to merit a flogging by the police? It's such an awful video.
