Seven members of the Comando Vermelho faction died in the early hours yesterday, around 3 am, in a confrontation with the police in the Ceará area. The bodies were sent to the Legal Medical Institute.

Along with the gang, the police seized eight firearms, including one rifle, four pistols, three revolvers, as well as more than 150 rounds of ammunition and drugs.

The shootout occurred in the Campinas neighborhood, an area controlled by a rival faction of the Comando Vermelho in the municipality.

The criminals from Comando Vermelho went to the rivals' area to try to take over the neighborhood, but they encountered police officers from Raio, Cotar (Rural Tactical Command), FT (Tactical Force), FT Rural and General Ostensive Policing.

According to the Public Security Secretariat, the criminals threw grenades at the police officers, who returned fire.

The governor of Rio de Janeiro, Cláudio Castro, congratulated the Ceará police. "I congratulate the police officers of Ceará and Governor Elmano de Freitas (PT) for their courage and determination in confronting organized crime.

Today's episode shows, once again, that this is a war that knows no borders and requires unity among the states," Castro stated.

I saw a vid last night taken from a cop on a rolling column, and it was heartening to see regular citizens waving and showing thanks and support.

I couldn't find it today. Now youtube is clogged up with Rio's a-hole "protesters."
