Unfortunately, he likely prolonged his dying minutes/seconds by reclining. Laying back got his head out of the fire pillar and allowed him to breath cooler, oxygen-rich air. If he had leaned against a tree to stay sitting upright, his brain would have baked faster and he would have suffocated faster due to lung burns and no oxygen.

I thought someone was there, too, but I think something just fell in front of the camera. In any event, it’s horrifying how long it took for him to die.

Now, THIS is an honorable way to die very much akin to the respected Japanese seppuku ritual. Fire is cleansing and it takes an extreme amount of mental fortitude to actually go through with this all alone in the wilderness. The forest fire risk wasn’t cool, but it could have the rainy season and if so, any forest fire would be quickly put out by the next heavy shower.
