It is a very complicated situation and one that cannot be easily explained. However, I can try to give you a very quick overview, which I am sure will gloss over most of the issues and somehow be not quite right, but I`ll give it a try.

It makes for a quagmire to be sure. Neither side is very admirable if you ask me, but the Chechens are at least fighting for their home land and something outside of greed.
Yeltsin "argued that Chechnya had not been an independent entity within the Soviet Union—as the Baltic, Central Asian, and other Caucasian States had—but was part of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic and hence did not have a right under the Soviet constitution to secede; second, that other republics of Russia, such as Tatarstan, would consider seceding from the Russian Federation if Chechnya were granted that right; and third, that Chechnya was a major hub in the oil infrastructure of the Federation and hence its secession would hurt the country's economy and control of oil resources."
So at the end of the day it is about oil and empire building and using your enemies religion against them to keep them from gaining international sympathy for their plight.

after the collapse of the soviet union,dudyev who was the general of the soviet air force was pushing for chechen independence which led to a mass of organised crime, the chechens deported and killed many russians ukranians and belarusians civilians before the war and russia could not freely give away a republic because if they did then there was a chance that the rest of the republics would push for independence (nothing to do with oil, chechnya has as much oil as the Sahara desert has water)

so in 1994 russia moved its troops into grozny to to stop the breaking away of chechnya but they didnt intend to actually fight, so the chechens inturn hid allaround grozny and wen the russian troops came in they began attacking them turning grozny into a blood bath and the 1st war lasted till 1996 wen a ceasefire was signed by both sides.

then in 1999 a band of chechens entered dagestan intending to capture it which triggered off the 2nd chechen conflict which still hasn't exactly ended (but officially in russia it has).

personally i blame the conflict on islam, the international commnity doesnt give a shit abt this conflict and wont intervene in it just to not upset russia
