 Gold.  It's a reference to a schtick done by an old '80s comedian named Yakov Smirnov. His whole schtick was that he was a transplant fob from the USSR who was amazed at Western live and he'd do comparison jokes and the like. One example was his joke about the Soviet surveillance apparatus, "In America, you watch a lot of TV. Soviet Russia, TV watches you! :-D" So yeah, it's become a cliché gag rooted in nostalgia among people who get the reference. Don't, like, have a fuckin' aneurysm about it or anything. |
